Bhubaneswar: Police intercepted 31 migrants, who were working near Infocity in Bhubaneswar, at Damana Square here while they were walking back to their home state amid the COVID-19 lockdown on Sunday.
According to sources, the labourers from Jharkhand had lost their jobs following the lockdown. Left with little money, they had then decided to leave Bhubaneswar.
On hearing about their plight, police officials made arrangements for them to return to their home state in a bus that had arrived from Jharkhand to drop migrants in Puri.
Similarly, Khurda police arranged transport for 44 migrant labourers from West Bengal and Jharkhand, who had undertaken an arduous journey for home from Andhra Pradesh.
Odisha DGP Abhaya had earlier informed the media that no migrant will be allowed to travel on foot within the boundaries of the state as per the direction of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. He had said that transportation and food are being arranged for them from Chief Minister’s Relief Fund at three of the 12 checkpoints in the state. He had also urged migrants using Odisha as a transit point to approach their nearest police station for help.
