Bhubaneswar: A special squad of Commissionerate Police here has nabbed 5 members of a dacoit gang, allegedly involved in the recent loot attempt on Odisha’s IPS officer Sagarika Nath’s parents and other crimes.

“The gang was involved in 21 robbery cases. Among them is a professional gold receiver. 45 grams of gold, 10 gold chains, Rs 40,000 in cash, two motorcycles, fake number plates and eight mobile phones have been seized from them,” Bhubaneswar DCP Prateek Singh informed on Sunday.

He further said that the accused, who belong to Jajpur, Khurda Nayagarh, Jagatsinghpur and Bhubaneswar’s Saheed Nagar, engaged in chain snatching, night burglary and loot.

They were arrested on basis of cases registered in Bharatpur and Chandrashekarpur and evidence collected by scientific team and CCTV footage. Cases are also pending against them at Pahala, Shaheed Nagar, Kharvela Nagar, Nayapalli in Bhubaneswar, Binjharpur in Jajpur district and Rajkanika in Kendrapada, sources said, adding that the gang had created terror among state capital denizens in the last 6 months.

On July 2 evening, some unidentified miscreants had allegedly tried to loot valuables from parents of IPS officer Sagarika Nath, who is currently serving as Balasore SP, near AMRI Hospital in Kolathia area within Bharatpur police limits. On facing resistance, they smashed the windscreen and driver side window of the car with an iron rod which he was carrying on the bike. The IPS officer’s father drove the vehicle into their bike, which then forced them to flee.
