Low-Pressure Area Over Bay Of Bengal Likely To Become Well-Marked In 36 Hours

Bhubaneswar: The low-pressure area that has formed over west-central and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a well-marked low-pressure area in the next 36 hours over north-west Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha, the meteorological centre in Bhubaneswar said on Friday.

The system is expected to trigger intense spells of rain in Odisha. While several districts will experience heavy rain (yellow warning) till September 12, very heavy rainfall (orange warning) is likely at some places on September 10 and 11.

The Met office issued a warning for very heavy rainfall at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Khurda, Nayagarh and Puri from 8.30 am of September 10 till 8.30 am of September 11; and for Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Balangir, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Deogarh, Jharsuguda and Cuttack from 8.30 am of September 11 till 8.30 am of September 12.

According to SOA, the weather system will be very close to south Odisha coast on September 10. It will move along the coast up to September 11 and thereafter move north-westwards in north Odisha region.

Under its influence, rainfall intensity will increase from September 9 night. Widespread moderate rain from September 9 night to September 11 morning in south Odisha and adjoining coastal Odisha region with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few locations in the districts of Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Balangir, Khurda, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Angul, Ganjam, Rayagada, Gajapati, Nabarangpur, Puri and Jagatsinghpur. From September 11, widespread moderate rainfall will increase in north Odisha region and continue up to September 12 with heavy to very heavy falls at a few locations in Khurda, Cuttack, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sundergarh, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur and Jagatsinghpur.

There is probability of very heavy rainfall in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack on September 10 and 11, the SOA said.
