Low Pressure Forms Over Bay Off Odisha Coast, IMD Issues Heavy To Very Heavy Rain Alert

Bhubaneswar: A fresh low-pressure area has formed over westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Thursday. 

“Under the influence of cyclonic circulation over coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal, a low-pressure area has formed over westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts. It is likely to move slowly northwards during the next two day,” it said.

The low pressure is likely to trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall across Odisha till September 9.

On September 5, yellow warning of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lighting has been issued for some places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur districts. Thunderstorm with lightning may also occur in Nuapada, Balangir, Bargarh, Nayagarh, Khurda and Puri.

Bhubaneswar may experience partly cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershower.

On September 6, heavy rain may continue in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Nuapada and Balangir districts. Thunderstorm with lightning is also likely in Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore and Mayurbhanj.

On September 7, intensity of the spells may increase in Malakangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur districts. Isolated heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm/lightning may also occur in Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Boudh, Nayagarh, Khurda and Puri . Thunderstorm with lightning is also expected in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur districts.

On September 8, heavy to very heavy rain may continue in Sambalpur and Angul districts. Heavy rain is also likely in Nuapada, Balangir, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Khurda, Cuttack, Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts.

On September 9, heavy rain is also likely in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur and Deogarh.

While there is no warning thereafter, light to moderate rain/thundershower may occur at many places in North Odisha and at a few places in South Odisha during the subsequent two days, it added.
