Low Pressure Forms Over Bay; Squall, Very Heavy Rain To Pound Odisha Today

Bhubaneswar: A Low Pressure Area has formed over Northwest Bay of Bengal, adjoining North Odisha-West Bengal coasts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Sunday.

“Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over Northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining north Odisha-West Bengal coasts, a Low Pressure Area has formed over the same region with associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height,” the weather agency said.

Under the influence of the system, squally weather with gusty surface wind speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph very likely over North Bay of Bengal adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal , along and off Odisha coast from June 25 to June 27 morning. Fishermen have been advised to not to venture into sea area of along and off Odisha coast, North Bay of Bengal adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal during this period, it added.

Several districts in Odisha are also likely to experience heavy to extreme rainfall during the day. Orange warning has been issued for 10 districts.

According to the MeT office, heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at a few places in Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Bargarh, Deogarh, Balangir, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda with extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places over the districts of Sambalpur, Sonepur and Boudh.

Heavy rainfall is also likely at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangapur and Nuapada.

The orange warning continues for Monday with heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) at a few places in Bargarh, Balangir, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Boudh and Nabarangpur with extremely heavy rain (>20cm) at one or two places in Balangir, Kalahandi and Bargarh.

Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) may also occur at one or two places in Jharsuguda, Sundergarh, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Cuttack, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Malkangiri and Koraput during this period.
