Bhubaneswar: The southwest monsoon, which is all set to touch the Kerala coast on Thursday, will take approximately a week to reach the Odisha coast.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the condition is favourable for further advancement of the southwest monsoon.
Well-known meteorologist Dr Surendranath Pasupalak said a low-pressure, which is most likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal next week, will drive the monsoon to the Odisha coast either on June 10 or 11.
“Going by the Global Forecast System (GFS) model data prepared by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), there will be a change in the wind direction from June 5 as the westerly wind will change its course towards the north. Under its influence, a cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal along the coast on June 10 followed by a low-pressure over the same area in the next 24 hours on June 11,” he said.
He said that the low pressure will trigger rainfall in Balasore and gradually spread over the remaining districts later. However, there will be comparatively less rainfall in south Odisha.
Stating that a clear picture will emerge by June 7, Pasupalak said the monsoon will become active over the north Bay of Bengal and trigger rainfall over the north coastal districts in the absence of a low pressure.
AccuWeather Meteorologist Jason Nicholls has also forecast enhanced rainfall activities in Odisha due to a possible depression in the Bay of Bengal.
“Low pressure to form in N BOB late next week; can become depression. The main impact enhanced rain possible from Odisha to Bangladesh and N-E India,” he tweeted.
