Low Pressure To Head Towards Odisha Coast Bringing Very Heavy Rain; IMD Issues Orange Warning

Bhubaneswar: The cyclonic circulation over Myanmar & adjoining Eastcentral Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a low pressure area over Eastcentral and adjoining Northeast Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours and trigger heavy to very heavy rain Odisha from next month, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Thursday.

“The low pressure area is likely to become well marked and move northwestwards towards North Odisha and adjoining West Bengal coasts during subsequent 48 hours,” it said.

While heavy rain will resume in Odisha from September 29, the IMD has issued orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain from October 1.

According to the midday bulletin, thunderstorm with lightning is likely at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Bhadrak districts till 8.30 am on Friday.  Light to moderate rain or thundershower may also occur at a few places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, and at one or two places in remaining districts of the state.

The intensity of rain will gradually increase thereafter with yellow warning for one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak on September 29. Thunderstorm with lightning may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sundargarh, Kandhamal, Malkangiri, Koraput Nabarangpur, and Rayagada.

On September 30, heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) may continue at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Deogarh and Sambalpur. Yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning has also been issued for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Boudh, Sonepur, Balangir, Kalahandi and Kandhamal.

On October 1, the IMD has issued orange warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) at one or two places in Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Balangir and Angul districts. Heavy rain (7 to 11cm) may also lash one or two places in Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Boudh, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Balasore.

On October 2, there is a forecast for heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places in Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Bargarh, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh districts. Heavy rainfall is also likely at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Kandhamal, Boudh, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul. Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.

The weather agency has predicted little change in the weather conditions during the subsequent two days. It has also warned of waterlogging in low-lying areas and underpass roads, inundation of agricultural fields, occasional reduction of visibility causing traffic congestion in urban areas and damage to kutch roads and houses. Farmers have been advised to postpone fertiliser/chemicals application in agricultural field and keep livestock at safe places.
