Talcher: A major fire broke out at the NTPC plant at Kaniha in Talcher of Odisha’s Angul district on Saturday.
As per preliminary reports, the fire was reported at the conveyor belt at the plant.
The entire area has been filled with smoke following the fire mishap at the plant, creating panic among staff and local residents.
On being informed, at least two teams of the Fire Services department reportedly reached the spot and launched an operation to douse the flames, sources said. The firefighting unit of the plant also swung into action to put out the blaze.
While the exact reason behind the fire was yet to be ascertained, it was suspected to have been triggered by the coal being transported through the conveyor belt.
NTPC sources said the fire was reported at around 8:10 am at the conveyor belt 15 A and B along with at coal transfer point 16 located between Unit 2 and 3. The fire was quickly responded by CISF Fire Wing and Plant Disaster team and doused fully.
No one has received any injury apart from minor first aid to a CISF personnel during fire fighting, they said.
As a precautionary measure, Unit 3 of 500 MW was taken under shutdown for a brief time to contain fire. All other units are normal. The root cause of fire and damage is being assessed and necessary repair work will be started soon, the sources added.
