Major Rivers In Spate In South, North Odisha

Bhubaneswar: With heavy rain lashing most parts of southern, northern and coastal districts of Odisha under the influence of deep depression, flood threat is looming large in these districts with the rise in the water level of major rivers.

The situation is reportedly grim in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Balasore and Cuttack districts.

In Ganjam district, the rainwater has entered several low-lying areas in Chhatrapur town. In Purushottampur, rainwater has been flowing at a height of about 6 feet near the college. As a result, road communication between Purushottampur and Berhampur has been disrupted.

In Bhanjanagar block, rainwater has entered several houses in several lanes of the town area. Several villages of Baunsalundi, Gamapali and Gamundi panchayats have been marooned by the floodwater of Loharakhandi and Badanadi rivers, which have crossed the danger marks. Till reports last came, Loharakhandi and Badanadi were flowing at a height of 72.87 metres and 102.55 metres respectively.

Following heavy rain, a portion of the road between Sheragada and Lathipada has been swept away. In another incident, a bridge over the Jorau river caved in near Badagada.

In Gajapati district, road communication between Paralakhemundi and Andhra Pradesh has been disrupted due to overflowing of the floodwater of Mahendratanaya at several places.

In Kandhamal district, a major bridge connecting Baliguda and Bakingia has been swept away in flash flood. The water level of Salunki river was flowing near the danger level.

In Nayagarh district, two youths of Landapadu village under Odagaon block were swept away by the floodwater.

In Balasore district, the overnight torrential rain has led to the rise in the water level of Jalaka river, which is flowing at 5.8 metres against the danger mark of 5.5 metres.

On the other hand, road communication along the National Highway-53 has been disrupted at Kamakhyanagar in Dhenkanal due to the falling of big trees near Muktapasi.

In Khurda district, the low-lying areas of Begunia, Tangi and Chilika blocks continue to remain flooded with rainwater.

In Jatni, rainwater was flowing at a height of about 15 feet under the flyover in the market area.

Road communication between Puri and Pipili has also been disrupted with rainwater at several places.

In Cuttack district, three of a family at Bishnupur village under Tigiria police limits under Athagarh sub-division were injured following a landslide in the Mundia hill.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, in a release on Friday has issued severe thunderstorm warning accompanied by lightning, intense rainfall and strong surface wind for 15 districts of Cuttack, Khurda, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Angul, Sambalpur, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Kandhamal, Sundargarh and Deogarh and advised people to remain indoors till 2 pm.
