Baripada: A special court in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Monday sentenced a man to rigorous imprisonment for 20 years for raping a minor girl over four years ago.
Special POCSO Court Judge Sumitra Jena, while convicting Sunaram Singh and awarding jail term, also imposed a fine of Rs 13,000 on him. The court directed that he would undergo another 7 months jail term if he fails to pay the fine amount.
Sunaram, a resident of Sagunashola under Bangiriposhi police station limits, had on May 5, 2018 taken the minor girl to a secluded place and raped her. The girl later narrated the incident to her parents.
Acting on a complaint filed by the girl’s parents, the police conducted investigation and arrested Sunaram.
The court pronounced the order after hearing statements of 16 witnesses and considering evidence submitted by police.
