Cuttack: Police have arrested a married woman and her paramour for alleged murder of her husband in Odisha’s Cuttack district.

Speaking to media on Tuesday, Cuttack DCP Pinak Mishra said the woman, identified as Suhasini Mohapatra, was married to Nischala Mohapatra of Govindpur in Nialia area in the district. Nischala, who worked as a bus conductor, was staying with his wife in Choudwar.

Purna Chandra Maharana, who was a long-time friend of Nischala, used to visit the latter’s house. After Nischala’s marriage also, he continued to go to his house. Over the time, Suhasini and Purna developed a relationship. They wanted to get married and conspired to eliminate Nischala.

On December 1, Nischala was found in a critically burnt condition in Biratgadi area and admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack. But he succumbed to burn injuries.

Suspecting foul play, Choudwar police registered a case of unnatural death and started investigation. During the investigation, their suspicion zeroed in on Purna and Shasini. During questioning, both of them admitted to have killed Nischala.

Revealing the details, Purna told the police that he had invited Nischala to a feast in Biratgadi. After Nischala got heavily intoxicated due to consumption of liquor, Purna poured kerosene on him and set him on fire. Assuming that Nischala was dead, he had left the place.
