Bhubaneswar: A man was detained by police for allegedly killing his wife and minor son in the city on Tuesday.
According to preliminary investigation of police, the man, identified as Abanti Bijaya Mangaraj, was staying with his wife Swarna Lata mangaraj and their 10-year-old son in K-4 area of Kalinga Nagar in the city. After Abanti sustained huge loss in the share market, he decided to kill his family members and commit suicide.
As per his statement to police, he mixed sleeping tablets in the food of his wife and son on Monday night. As they fell asleep, he killed both of them by strangulating them with a stole at 3 am on Tuesday. He later tried to commit suicide but did not succeed.
Abanti left the house in the morning and roamed around. He told his nephew about his crime over phone at around 3 pm. After his nephew informed the police through some other person, Abanti was apprehended on Tuesday evening.
Umashankar Dash, DCP, Bhubaneswar told the media that following information, a team rushed to the spot and found the bodies lying in the bedroom of Abanti’s house. “We informed all the police stations across the city to trace the killer and Abanti was apprehended,” Dash said.
“We have detained Abanti after he admitted to have killed his wife and son by strangulating them. However, we are yet to ascertain the reason and circumstances that led him to commit the crime,” the DCP said.
A scientific team went to the spot to collect evidence and further investigation is on.
