Nayagarh: A man and his 5-year-old girl were found dead under mysterious circumstances in Odisha’s Nayagarh late on Wednesday.
The deceased have been identified as Pulak Biswal (36) and his daughter Palak (5).
Nayagarh Town police recovered the bodies from a house at Debadatara lane 4 after breaking the lock in presence of tehsildar and executive magistrate. It is suspected that Pulak first poisoned his daughter and later ended his life by hanging himself about two days ago.
Sources said that Pulak had married for the second time about three months ago after the death of his first wife. He, however, was concerned about his daughter’s future. He allegedly decided to take the extreme step when his second wife was away in her parental house. When she returned to Nayagarh, she found the house locked. She informed police when repeated knocking on the door elicited no response.
“I had come to drop my sister off and found that the house was locked. The mobile phone of my brother-in-law was also switched off. Later, we called police and informed them about the matter,” said Dipak Swain, a relative.
While the bodies have been sent for postmortem, a scientific team has reached the spot to collect evidence. Police are also questioning his second wife and relative to ascertain the reason behind their death, the sources added.
A police officer said that domestic dispute is being suspected as a reason behind the deaths but added that the case is being investigated from all angles.
