Bhopal: Men allegedly belonging to a right-wing group shot dead a man at a wedding in Madhya Pradesh on Monday. Police said they have arrested three men in the case.
Following the incident, a protest was held here on Monday evening. The cops are yet to confirm whether the men belong to any right-wing group.
The followers of jailed ‘godman’ Rampal organised the wedding ceremony. Rampal, from Haryana, is currently serving a life sentence in connection with the murder of six persons — five women and an infant.
According to senior police officer Amit Verma, the armed men barged into the ceremony and alleged that such weddings are organised “illegally”.
Rampal’s followers say the godman follows a different wedding ceremony, known as Ramaini, which takes only 17 minutes. The attackers alleged that such a marriage is against the Hindu religion.
Cellphone videos of the attack that have been circulated online showed complete pandemonium as panic-stricken guests ran around trying to get away from the men wielding hefty poles and bamboos.
Former sarpanch Devilal Meena was shot during the chaos. Meena was rushed to a hospital in Rajasthan’s Kota, where he later died.
Some guests finally chased away the attackers. A murder case has been registered against 11 men who were identified. Three arrests have been made.
A two-time sarpanch and resident of the Shamgarh area, Meena was supported by the state’s ruling BJP and was the main organiser of the wedding.
