New Delhi: Manipur MLAs from both Meitei and Kuki communities are likely to meet for peace talks in New Delhi on Tuesday, reports claimed. If they meet, then this will be the first such meeting since the ethnic clashes broke out last year, the Hindustan Times reported.

The talks will be supervised by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). It will be mediated by Naga MLAs too. In the past 10 months, the Naga MLAs had met Meitei and Kuki MLAs separately at neutral places like Kolkata and Guwahati.

Many MLAs had already reached Delhi, an official in the Manipur government said, as quoted by Hindustan Times. Other MLAs were scheduled to arrive in New Delhi on Monday. “We are not sure how many Kuki MLAs will be present in the meeting,” the official said.

After the clashes broke out, 10 tribal MLAs, including ministers from Manipur, had left the state Capital. Citing threats to their life, the MLAs have refused to enter Imphal.

Earlier, Union home minister Amit Shah had said the MHA was in talks with representatives of both the communities to restore normalcy.

Over 200 people died in the ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki groups.
