Bhubaneswar: Mannata Mishra scripted history by winning gold, the first-ever by Odisha, at the 50th Junior National Aquatic Championship being held at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Sunday.
Mannata, nurtured under the guidance of Odisha IIS Swimming HPC, achieved the feat in Group-I girls 100m breaststroke.
This was the second Junior National medal for Mannata. She had won a bronze in girls (Group-I) 200m breaststroke event on the second day of the six-day competition which began on August 6.
Pratyasa Ray from Odisha had previously won gold in Junior Nationals in Group II in an earlier edition.
In February, Mannata had clinched silver in the women’s 200m breaststroke event at the inaugural BIMSTEC Aquatics Championships held in New Delhi. It was her first international medal. This came three months after her bronze medal victory in the 4×100m women’s medley relay team at the Goa National Games.
