Bhubaneswar: A Maoist camp was unearthed and several explosive devices were recovered by the police after an exchange of fire with the naxals in a forest in Odisha’s Kandhamal district on Wednesday.
Acting on an information about the presence of Maoists inside a forest, a police team launched an operation in Kandhmal- Kalahandi border areas in the afternoon, sources said.
During the operation, the police team spotted some armed ultras in tents, surrounded by trees and dense bushes, inside the forest under the jurisdiction of Baliguda police station. A gunbattle broke out after the ultras opened fire on seeing the security personnel.
However, around five armed naxals were seen running after an encounter. The red rebels managed to escape taking advantage of thick vegetation and reduced visibility due to rain.
While the Maoist camp was busted, several articles were found in five large bags. A detonator and other IED instruments were found in one bag, while the rest four bags will be opened after observing safety protocols.
Search operations have been intensified in the area following the exchange of fire.
