Mayonnaise Banned In Telangana; Know Why

Hyderabad: Mayonnaise is a common ingredient for tasty food. But next time you have a sandwich with mayonnaise, you may think twice after reading this.

The Telangana government has banned mayonnaise over food safety concerns.

The government’s decision comes after multiple incidents of poisoning, linked to raw egg-based mayonnaise, being reported from different parts of the state.

The ban, which came into effect on Wednesday, will continue for a year before authorities review the situation.

While banning mayonnaise, Food Safety authorities encouraged alternative preparations to improve food hygiene and safeguard public health.

According to officials, a number of cases of contamination in the state in recent months were traced to the use of egg-based mayonnaise, which is commonly used to prepare items like sandwiches, shawarma and Al Faham grilled chicken etc.

It is used by emulsifying egg yolks with oil, often flavoured with vinegar or lemon juice.

“As per observations during enforcement activities and complaints received from the public in the state of Telangana, Mayonnaise made from raw eggs is suspected to be a cause of food poisoning in multiple incidents in the past few months,” Telanaga Food Safety Commissioner said in the order.

The Commissioner cited the Food Safety Act that empowers he authorities to take action “in cases where there are reasonable grounds to suspect that a food may present a risk for human health.”

Hence, the Commissioner ordered prohibition of “production, storage and sale of mayonnaise prepared from raw eggs for a period of one year with immediate effect from 30.10.2024.”
