Kendrapada: Around half-a-dozen medicine stores and diagnostic laboratories, and a nursing home were sealed for allegedly selling fake drugs and violating various rules in Odisha’s Kendrapada on Thursday.
According to sources, a special squad of the admiistration carried out raids on different medicine stores, labs and nursing homes located in different parts of Kendrapada town, especially on Medical Road.
The squad, which included the sub-collector and drug inspector, seized a huge quantity of ‘fake’ medicines from at least two chemist shops, sources said, adding that the medicines will be sent to laboratories for examination.
These medicine stores were sealed by the authorities during the special operation during which a large number of police personnel were present to assist the team.
At least two diagnostic laboratories and a nursing home were also sealed for alleged irregularities including lack of requisite certificates and permission under the clinical establishment act and for operating X-ray and ultra sound machines. It was also not clear whether qualified doctors and staff are engaged in these establishments, they said.
While people in general welcomed the step taken by the administration, ‘Medical Banchao Kriyanusthan Committee’ termed the action as ‘politically motivated.’ Leaders of the committee alleged that the move was taken after the bandh observed by it on Tuesday and Wednesday against shifting of the district headquarters hospital. “The move is to silence us,” they claimed
