New Delhi: Stand-up comedian Shyam Rangeela who was once eliminated from Great Indian Laughter Challenge for mimicking Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi, has declared that he will contest in the Lok Sabha elections against Narendra Modi from Varanasi.
Rangeela said he decided to jump into the fray because what happened in Surat should not happen in Varanasi and someone’s name should be there on the EVM. Though the comedian had joined Aam Aadmi Party Rajasthan, his home state, in 2022, Rangeela will be contesting as an independent candidate.
Rangeela said he was a huge Modi fan and it’s now time to challenge him.
“Ganga ji ne das saal baad Modi ji ko chhod ke mujhe bulaya hai (after 10 years Ganga ji has invited me),” he said in an interview with Indian Express.
He said that though his name is Rangeela, the actual Rangeela is Prime Minister Modi.
Rangeela became an Internet sensation following his mimicry of Modi. He was eliminated from Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2017, but the video of his act — which was never aired — got leaked and became viral.
Today, his YouTube channel, which runs a show named ‘Dhang ki baat’ mimicking Modi, has 9,24,000 subscribers.
The 1994-born Rangeela is from Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh and his real name is Shyam Sundar.
Rangeela has sought support from the people of Varanasi and said he will soon inform people when he is filing his nomination.
