Berhampur: A day after an electricity meter reader was hacked to death by a consumer over an allegedly inflated bill in Odisha’s Ganjam, power distribution company TPSODL on Tuesday announced Rs 16 lakh compensation to the family of the deceased.

In a statement, TP Southern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL) said it has also given instruction to ensure the employment of the legal heir of the deceased, Laxmi Narayan Tripathy, with the associate agency.

Stating that it is firmly committed to standing by Tripathy’s family during this challenging period, TPSODL said as a gesture of deep concern and in recognition of his invaluable contributions, it has instructed to the agency to pay compensation of Rs 16 lack for his family. “Additionally, it was also instructed to ensure the employment of the legal heir of the deceased with the associate agency,” it said.

This compensation aims to assist his family in facing financial and emotional challenges that may arise from this tragedy. “We hope this gesture offers some comfort and relief as they navigate this difficult period,” it said.

Noting that its commitment to the safety of our employees and Business Associates remains steadfast, TPSODL said it prioritises their well-being and will collaborate with local communities and authorities to maintain a secure working environment.

It may be noted that Tripathy (34) of Gallery village was hacked to death in broad daylight by a consumer over an allegedly inflated bill at Kupati in Tarsingh area on Monday. The accused, Govind Sethi of Kupati village, has been arrested.

The incident took place when Tripathy had gone to the village to read electricity meters and serve bills to consumers. When he handed the bill at the house of the accused, Sethi became enraged as his bill amount was more than what he had anticipated.

An argument ensued between the duo and in a fit of rage, Sethi attacked Tripathy with a sharp weapon. The meter reader sustained fatal injuries on his neck and head and died instantly.
