Gajapati: A migrant worker from Odisha has allegedly been been killed in Tamil Nadu. Some people, believed to be middlemen, have demanded Rs 15,000 from his family to release the body, sources said Tuesday.

The deceased migrant worker was identified as Sharat Parichaa of Adaba police limits in Odisha’s Gajapati district. The family members of the deceased were intimated about his death through a WhatsApp call.

According to sources, he left for Tamil Nadu about 8 months ago. A relative of his had received a video call on Sunday in which they were shown an injured Sharat. Later, they were sent photographs of his dead body, claiming they he had been killed.

His family members are, however, skeptical about the killing. Sharat’s brother said that they have intimated the police about the incident and demanded immediate step to trace him in Tamil Nadu.

A police official of Adaba police station said that they have received a complaint in this regard. The family has been asked not to send any money to the account shared with him till the investigation is on, the sources added.

District Labour Officer Loknath Panda said that the family is unable to reveal any details about Sharat’s stay in Tamil Nadu. “I have spoken to the IIC, we need to know where he is to be able to bring the body back home,” he added.
