Jajpur: A minor boy died while his mother became critically ill after drowning in Baitarani river near Ghanashyampur under Korei police limits in Jajpur district on Saturday.
The deceased child has been identified as Manas Pati (12). His mother Manjulata Pati (40) is undergoing treatment at Jajpur hospital.
According to available information, Manas and his mother had come to take bath in the river after attending a funeral ritual of their relative. However, he suddenly slipped and fell into the water body before entering into it. Noticing her child screaming, the woman, who attempted to rescue her son, unfortunately drowned in the water body.
Soon after the incident, a group of villagers rushed to the spot and managed to rescue Manjulata. However, they failed to trace and rescue the child from the deep waters.
Being alerted regarding the mishap, police and fire personnel rushed to the spot and rescued the boy after a two-hour effort.
The duo was immediately rushed to Jajpur hospital. Later, the child died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
