Keonjhar: A six-year-old tribal girl died while her younger sister was critical after consuming toad curry at Guruda under Bamebari area of Odisha’s Keonjhar district.
The deceased was identified as Sumitra Munda. Her 4-year-old sister Megha has been admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) at Keonjhar for treatment.
According to sources, the two girls and their family members had consumed frog meat on Thursday night. After eating the meat, the children’s condition turned critical and they complained of vomiting and nausea before falling unconscious.
However, their father Muna Munda (40) and other family members who also ate the curry, faced no complication.
While Sumitra died on Friday, Megha was admitted to hospital where her condition was stated to be critical.
Police started a probe after registering an unnatural death case in Bamebari police station. After post-mortem, the body of Sumitra was handed over to her family, police said.
Sources said a gland of frogs and toads have toxins to save themselves from predators. The poison can affect if one eats them. Similarly, skins of certain categories of frogs also have toxins.
