Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly was adjourned till 3 pm on Thursday amid an uproar by Opposition Congress and BJP MLAs over the alleged murder of a minor girl of Jadupur village in Nayagarh district.

As soon as the session began for the day, BJP members rushed to the well of the House demanding the resignation of minister Arun Sahoo. The agitating MLAs displayed placards and showed the photo of the minister with Babuli Nayak, the man accused of the murder.

The Congress MLAs also demanded the minister’s resignation.

Taking a dig at the minister of state for Home on his statement that the state government has ordered a Crime Branch probe into the case, Congress member Tara Prasad Bahinipati said that the former remained silent on the alleged involvement of the minister.

Claiming that the Crime Branch probe into the incident will yield no result, he demanded a High Court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe and the resignation of the minister as he might try to influence the probe.

Following this, Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro adjourned the House for 20 minutes and later till 3 pm as the pandemonium continued.

Talking to the media later, Opposition Chief Whip Mohan Charan Majhi said the Minister of State for Home had announced in the Assembly that the state government has asked the Crime Branch to probe the incident.

“The fact is that earlier, the state government had also ordered the Crime Branch to probe several major cases. But the Crime Branch is yet to submit a single report. We all know that the Crime Branch probe is just an eyewash and the minister’s statement has no meaning. “We will not allow the Assembly to function till the minister resigns,” Majhi added.
