New Delhi: Politics in India is becoming more and more toxic, with vicious personal attacks being the norm rather than exception.

Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is the latest to join the bandwagon.

Having called Narendra Modi a ‘pagal (mad) PM’, the Congress MP had to issue a clarification following an uproar over his comment.

Commenting on a meeting between AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on Tuesday, Chowdhury said, “Now people of India are frustrated with Modi. People are saying Modi is ‘pagal’ Modi. Now that people have gone against Modi, parties like AAP and TMC are trying to be relevant.”

The MP from West Bengal’s Behrampore constituency on Wednesday said he was simply “echoing the sentiments of the public and was voicing what the people were saying over the withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes”.

Chowdhury said he is not Modi but ‘pagla’ Modi.

“People called him ‘pagla’ Modi,” the Congress leader said while speaking on the decision to withdraw Rs 2000 notes.

BJP strongly condemned Chowdhury’s remark.

“Congress leader Adhir Ranjan abuses PM Modi again and calls him ‘pagla’. He has used the abusive language again and again. He is a repeated offender. I strongly condemn this. He should apologise immediately,” West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumder tweeted.
