Berlin: Having made India’s stand on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine clear to visiting British PM Boris Johnson recently, Narendra Modi sought Germany’s ears as he spelled out his government’s position on the first day of his three-nation European tour.
After the Indian Prime Minister met German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the two leaders addressed the media jointly at the Chancellery in Berlin.
“No country can emerge victorious in the Ukraine conflict. We are for peace, appeal to end the war,” Modi said.
Russia being a close ally, India abstained from a vote in the UN condemning Russia’s attack and didn’t also participate in the vote which kicked Vladimir Putin’s country out of UNHRC. However, India have maintained from Day 1 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that violence and killings must end and a solution to all issues should be found through dialogue only.
The German Chancellor minced no words in criticizing Russia’s act.
“Through its attack on Ukraine, Russia has violated fundamental principles of international law. The war and the brutal attacks against civilian population in Ukraine show how unrestrained Russia has been in violating the fundamental principles of the UN Charter,” Scholz said.
“I repeat my appeal to Vladimir Putin — end this senseless killing, withdraw your troops from Ukraine,” the Chancellor added.
Modi pointed out that India and Germany share several common values and the Inter Governmental Consultations (IGC) show how much importance the two countries place in their strategic ties.
Modi arrived in Germany on the first leg of his visit to three European nations on Monday and met German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
