Bhubaneswar: With the onset of monsoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday forecast heavy rain in several parts of Odisha during the next five days.
“The southwest monsoon has set in over Odisha covering Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur districts and some parts of Nuapada, Kalahandi and Rayagada districts,” the MeT office said.
IMD scientist Umashankar Das told the media that rainfall activity has increased and become widespread in Odisha. Temperature too has dipped across the state. “Many parts saw heavy to very heavy rainfall. We expect monsoon to advance further into the state in 2-3 days,” he added.

Thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Boudh, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khurda and Puri.
Heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in Dhenkanal, Angul, Sambalpur, Keonjhar and Jajpur during the period.
From 8.30 am on June 18 to 8.30 am on June 19
Thunderstorm with lightning is very likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Nuapada.
Light to moderate rain is also likely at many places in North Odisha and a few places in South Odisha.
From 8.30 am on June 19 to 8.30 am on June 20
Thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Balasore, Bhadrak and Jajpur.
Light to moderate rain is also likely at many places in interior Odisha and a few places in coastal Odisha.
From 8.30 am on June 20 to 8.30 am on June 21
Thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur.
Heavy rainfall is also likely to occur at one or two places in Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada and Mayurbhanj during the period.
