New Delhi: Interner penetration in India has increased exponentially over the years as the latest government study said that nearly 42 per cent of the urban households had access to the digital medium.
The latest social consumption survey report of the National Statistical Office released on Saturday said that more than 14 per cent in rural areas as well had internet facilities.
The study conducted between June 2017 and July 2018 said 23.4 per cent in cities had a computer at home. This figure stood at 4.4 per cent in rural households.
Moreover, 9.9 per cent of the populace in the age group of five and above were able to operate a computer. The survey also said that 13 per cent were able to use the internet and 10.8 per cent had visited various sites in the month preceding the survey.
The data was more promising in the case of urban India. Over 32.4 per cent of the people in these places were fluent with computers, 37.1 per cent had a good understanding of the internet world and 33.8 per cent has used the internet in the preceding month of the survey.
Earlier this year, market research agency Kanter IMRB had earlier this year revealed in a survey that the combined internet usage in India by 2019 end would touch 62.7 crore, largely driven by rural internet growth and usage.
The sheer increase in the number of usages and the reach makes India one of the fastest-growing internet destinations globally.
