Washington: Monkeypox is likely to get a new name soon.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is planning to rename it as MPOX to destigmatise the virus, Politico reported.
There has been growing pressure from officials of the Joe Biden-headed US government, who have been urging WHO to change the name, Politico added.
Three months ago, WHO had created an open forum seeking suggestions for a new name of the virus, which has spread to more than 50 countries.
The latest monkeypox outbreak, which started about a year ago, continues to be a global health emergency, according to WHO.

Monkeypox is transmitted to a human through an animal, human or materials contaminated with the virus. According to Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the virus enters human body through broken skin, respiratory tract or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth).
Since most monkeypox cases have been detected in men, especially those who have sex with men, there’s a lot of social stigma around the disease.
The WHO has even flagged the LGBTQ community.
