Mumbai Club-Level Cricketer Fails To Make IPL Cut, Commits Suicide

Mumbai: A club cricketer here has allegedly committed suicide for not being able a secure an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract.

The deceased cricketer was identified as 27-year-old Karan Tiwari, who was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his Malad (East) house on Monday night.

According to Mumbai tabloid mid-day, a friend of Tiwari said that the cricketer was depressed after he failed make the cut for the IPL 2020. Police have registered an accidental death report and investigations are underway.

Tiwari had been called to bowl in the nets to few IPL franchises at the Wankhede Stadium as a club-level cricketer. According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) rules, a cricketer is only eligible for IPL contract if he has represented a state team at any age group.

The mid-day report said that Tiwari had informed his friend that he would commit suicide and the friend had also informed the deceased’s sister. She later informed her mother but it was too late by then.

IPL 2020 is set to commence in the UAE on September 19.
