Sambalpur: A convict in a murder case escaped from police custody in a court in Odisha’s Sambalpur on Thursday.
According to sources, Gulgula Khan was convicted in the murder case and sentenced to imprisonment in 2001. He was issued bail in 2010 on the condition that he would have to appear before the court when summoned by it.
As Gulgula failed to appear on the date of summon, the court issued a warrant for his arrest. A team from Smbalpur Town police station arrested him on Wednesday night and took him to produce before the court after medical examination on Thursday.
While Gulgula was present on the court premises, he requested the police accompanying him to allow him to go to bathroom. While a policeman stood guard outside the lavatory, he went inside. But the convict managed to escape through skylight of the lavatory.
On coming to know that Gulgula had escaped, the police searched the court premises but failed to find him. A manhunt has been launched to trace the escaped convict.
