Cuttack: Following the arrest of a resident doctor of SCB Medical College and Hospital  for allegedly raping two patients on the hospital campus, his wife claimed that he has been framed and hinted at a conspiracy to spoil his career.

“He was to receive his degree next month. All senior and junior staff including the head of the cardiology department and the dean of the medical college are involved in this conspiracy,” she told reporters.

She also questioned the delay in filing an FIR by the victims. “They went back home on that day then came back and brutally thrashed my husband. Only after he was admitted to the ICU in a critical condition that they went to lodge a complaint with police,” she alleged.

The accused doctor, identified as Dilbag Singh Thakkur, was admitted to the ICU of the hospital after allegedly being beaten up by relatives of the patients, including some junior doctors, who are friends of the victims’ relative, who is also a MBBS student in the same medical college.

She further stated that her husband, a native of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, was asked by his seniors to conduct the echocardiogram test. “The two patients along with a undergraduate medical student, who had brought his mother for the test, were present. If one of the patient was sexually assaulted then why the 60-year-old woman went for the test after her?” she asked.

She further alleged that police are not allowing her to meet her husband. “I will get to know the reason behind this conspiracy only when I am able to speak to him,” she said, adding that they have lodged a counter FIR with police.

Earlier speaking to the media, Cuttack Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Anil Mishra said that the standard operating procedure during the test was not followed. “According to the complaint, the victims had initially gone for the echocardiogram test on Friday but were advised by the accused doctor to come on Sunday. A lady attendant or a staff nurse should be present during the test but no one was there. Even though the victims’ relative, who is a medical student, requested to remain present during the test, the accused declined the request,” he said.

He added that the case was registered under Section 62 (2)(e) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Mangalabag police station on Monday.

Meanwhile, a three-member committee formed by the state government has began a probe into the incident.
