Bhubaneswar: The Nandankanan Zoological Park in Odisha capital has acquired 20 new species from Alipore Zoo of Kolkata through an animal exchange programme
As per sources, Nandankanan Zoo received eight green iguanas (4 male and 4 female), six water monitor lizards (2 male and 4 female), two spoonbills (1 male and 1 female) and two fishing cats (1 male and 1 female) from Alipore Zoo in the first phase of the exchange programme.
In the next phase, the zoo will get two giraffes (1 male and 1 female) from Kolkata under the animal exchange programme.
In exchange for 20 animals, Nanadankanan Zoo transferred one tiger, two lions (1 male and 1 female), and two Himalayan black bears (female) to Alipore Zoological Park on Tuesday.
Nandankanan zoo will also hand over five Hog deer (2 male and 3 female), two Hippos (1 male and 1 female), four Muse deer (2 male and 2 female), and two Barasingha (1 male and 1 female) to Alipore Zoo.
With this new addition, the total number of species at Nandankanan Zoo has increased to 169.
