Bhubaneswar: The win in the Odisha Municipal Elections is a reflection of the outpouring of love for BJD and the untiring effort of thousands of party workers, BJD president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik tweeted after the party cliched 95 of 108 councils, the results of which were announced on Saturday.
The 106 NACs/Municipalities and three Municipal Corporations in Odisha will have new representatives heading the urban local bodies after a gap of nine years once the counting of votes ends on Saturday evening.
The BJD won the Mayor posts in all three municipal corporations – Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Berhampur.
Of the 105 municipalities/NACs, BJD has got the lion’s share of councillor/chairperson seats. The party has won 73 of 105 chairperson seats. While BJP is a distant second at 16, Congress and other candidates have got 7 and 9 seats respectively.
Out of 1,724 councillor posts in urban bodies, whose results were declared, BJD won 1,183 at a rate of 68.61%. BJP could manage to win in 286 wards, followed by Congress in 139 and others in 116. The elections were held in total 1,731 councillor posts in all the civic bodies.
The counting of votes is being held at 58 NAC, 47 municipal councils, and three municipal corporations. Two tables have been set up in the counting centres in each NAC, five tables in each municipal council, and 12 tables in each municipal corporation. Votes for the posts of mayor and chairperson are being counted on the same table as those for councillor and corporator.
CCTV cameras have been installed in each counting centre.
Notably, the elections, which were held on March 24, saw 65 per cent of voters exercising their franchise and about 54% voted to elect councillors to three municipal corporations. A total of 6,411 candidates were in the fray.
