Bhubaneswar: Certain facts in the murder case of schoolteacher Mamita Meher are yet to be verified and a CBI probe can cover those aspects to reveal the whole truth, said Rekha Sharma, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW).

Speaking to the media after meeting DGP Sunil Kumar Bansal, here on Thursday, Sharma said she has suggested him to recommend to the state government for a CBI probe.

Besides covering the unexplored aspects, new evidence that would come out in the CBI investigation report can strengthen the chargesheet filed in the court, she added. “A relook into the chargesheet is necessary and if necessary, the case should be handed over to the CBI,” she said.

Speaking on the allegation of involvement of Minister of State (MoS) for Home Dibyashankar Mishra in the murder case, Sharma said his name has not been mentioned in the chargesheet.

Stating that the minister should have been questioned in the case as police come under jurisdiction of Home department, the Chairperson said the DGP’s office could not confirm whether Mishra has been questioned.

It may be noted that Sindhekela police in Balangir district had filed a 2,000-page chargesheet in the case in Bangamunda JMFC court on last Friday. The police had mentioned the names of prime accused Govind Sahu and his driver Radhe in the chargesheet.

Mamita, a resident of Turekela block in Balangir district, was working as a teacher in Sunshine English Medium School at Mahaling in Kalahandi. The 26-year-old teacher had gone missing on October 8 last year. Following a statewide outcry, the police arrested Sahu on October 19.

Later, Sahu’s interrogation led the police to dig out the charred body of Mamita from the ground of an under-construction stadium of the school. Sahu’s driver was also arrested after investigation confirmed his involvement in the crime.
