Imphal: The NEET (UG) 2023 examination has been postponed for candidates whose test centres were in Manipur.

The entrance test for admission to medical colleges across India will be held on Sunday, May 7 across India. The eleventh-hour decision to postpone the crucial exam in Manipur test centres comes in the wake of widespread violence in the north-east state.

As many as 54 people have lost their lives as protests and clashes between tribals and non-tribals spread on May 3 following a rally. A shoot-at-sight order was issued a day earlier.

The situation has improved as the Army has taken control of the state, but the Central government didn’t want to take a chance with NEET UG exam.

After Union Minister of State for External Affairs & Education Rajkumar Ranjan Singh wrote about rescheduling NEET (UG) 2023 exam in Manipur centres, the National Testing Agency (NTA) issued a notification to this effect.

“This is to inform you that the NEET (UG) 2023 Exam has been postponed for the candidates who were allotted examination centres in the state of Manipur and their exam will be held at a later date. The candidates are also being informed through automatic call and email,” the notification read.

Speaking on the development, Singh said that keeping a view of the current situation in Manipur, he had requested to postpone the examinations.

A total of 8751 candidates were scheduled to appear at two centres in Manipur, the minister told ANI.
