Bhubaneswar: A day after the State Transport Authority (STA) warned of cancelling the DL of two-wheeler drivers if the pillion rider does not wear helmet, Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera on Sunday said the traffic rules under the new MV Act will be strictly enforced again in the entire state from January, 2021.
Stating that the decision has been taken on the direction of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, the minister said awareness campaign will be taken up among people this month regarding the new rules. The traffic norms were relaxed in the state due to the COVID-19 situation.
The STA in a tweet has stated that the Driving Licence (DL) will be suspended for three months for driving above speed limit, red light jumping, drunken driving, using mobile phone while driving, carrying passengers in goods vehicle and not wearing helmet (both driver and pillion rider).
Earlier, the transport authority said both the person driving the two-wheeler and pillion rider have to wear helmets. If the pillion rider is found without a helmet, the DL of the person driving the vehicle will be suspended.
On Friday, the RTO in Cuttack suspended over 40 licenses and penalised traffic rule violators.
