Berhampur: The Ganjam collector has been asked to submit action-taken report by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in connection with the death of a Class X student of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) in Odisha’s Chhatrapur, in four weeks.
The girl has died on December 18, 2022.
The commission had sought the report earlier on January 11. In a final reminder to the magistrate, it warned of ‘coercive process’ if the former fails to submit the report during this time period.
The commission sought the report based on a petition filed a by human rights activist, Rabindra Kumar Mishra on the death of Roja Behera of Taraipatapur near Chhatrapur, who was staying in KGBV’s hostel for the past five years. He had appealed to the NHRC’s to direct the government to pay compensation to the bereaved parents.
Roja complained of pain in her abdomen following bouts of vomiting. The hostel warden and other staff members rushed her to the sub-divisional hospital at Chhatrapur, but the doctors there declared her brought dead.
Subsequently, her father, Fakir Charan Behera, lodged a police complaint alleging negligence and accordingly, police registered a case and initiated an investigation.
