New Delhi: The Centre clarified on Monday that there is absolutely no link between 5G technology and spread of COVID-19, and urged people not to be misguided by false information and rumours.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued a statement after it noticed several misleading messages being circulated on various social media platforms claiming that the second wave of coronavirus in India has been caused by the testing of 5G mobile towers.
DoT stated that there is no scientific basis to the linking of 5G technology with COVID-19 pandemic.
“Mobile towers emit non-ionizing Radio frequencies having very minuscule power and are incapable of causing any kind of damage to living cells including human beings. DoT has prescribed norms for exposure limit for the Radio Frequency Field (i.e. Base Station Emissions), which are 10 times more stringent than the safe limits prescribed by International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and recommended by WHO,” the statement said.
It also pointed out that the testing of 5G network has not yet started anywhere in India. So the question of 5G causing coronavirus in India doesn’t arise.
