New Delhi: A chapter titled ‘The Mughal Court: Reconstructing Histories through Chronicles’ has been removed from the CBSE medieval History textbooks for Class XII, according to reports published in different national dailies.
In this chapter, the students were taught about “Akbarnama” (the official chronicle of the reign of Akbar) and “Badshah Nama” (chronicle of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan), the composition of manuscripts, capitals and courts, Mughal rulers and their empire. The revised Class XII history textbooks of NCERT will be adopted by the government schools in Uttar Pradesh, the reports further said.
The NCERT has also decided to revise the contents of the Class XII Civics textbook and drop two chapters, ‘American Hegemony in World Politics’ and ‘The Cold War Era’. Class XII Political Science books have also been revised and chapters like ‘Rise of Popular Movements’, which is about the Socialist and Communist parties’ rise in India and ‘Era of One-Party Dominance’, which talks about the rule of Congress in the post-independence era, have been removed.
Chapters like the ‘Central Islamic lands’, ‘Confrontation of cultures’ and ‘The Industrial Revolution’ have also been removed from Class XI history textbook titled, ‘Themes In World History’. ‘Democracy and diversity’, ‘Popular struggles and movement’, ‘Challenges to democracy’ have been dropped from Class X textbook ‘Democratic Politics-II’.
These NCERT textbook changes will be implemented from the current academic session (2023-2024), the reports added.
According to NDTV, many of these changes were announced early 2022 when the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) rationalised its syllabi in April, “The content of the textbooks has been rationalized for various reasons, including overlapping with similar content in other subject areas in the same class, similar content included in the lower or higher classes on the same subject,” the NCERT said in a note, listing the changes.
The Uttar Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (UPBSE) had also announced that the syllabus for Class X, XI and XII following the NCERT curriculum will be revised in line with recent changes.
