New Delhi: Union Railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday ruled out privatisation of Indian railways.
Vaishnaw, who was speaking at India Today Budget Roundtable 2022 on ‘The Double-Engine Growth Model’, stated that it’s important for the government to play a dominant role in Railways and thus there is no question of privatisation of this sector.
He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a vision of changing passengers’ experience and hence the government is focusing on three steps – large-scale development of stations, new generation of trains and passengers’ safety.
A year and a half ago, Railways had invited request for qualification to private players for the operation of some passenger train services, leading to protests from several quarters. About 100 routes had been identified also. The project is yet to see the light of the day.
