Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has allayed fear of any threat to FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 due to Omicron sub-variant XBB.1.5.
Speaking to media persons on Monday, Niranjan Mishra, director, Public Health said the state government is prepared to face the situation in the wake of detection of the first case of COVID sub-variant XBB.1.5. All medical facilities have been updated in case of its outbreak in the state and the sub-variant will have no impact on the Hockey World Cup scheduled to start from January 13, he added.
But the state has reported only 50 COVID positive cases since November and there is no reason to panic, the director said.
On the preparedness for the spread of the virus, he said all medical colleges in the state have been directed to keep ready at least 20 beds each and the district headquarters hospitals (DHHs) have adequate beds. If necessary, the number of beds would be increased, he added.
He further said COVID tests will be increased in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, where the World Cup matches will be played, and Cuttack where inaugural function will be held. Besides, the PHCs and CHCs have been equipped with testing facilities and special testing centres have also been set up inside the stadiums.
Since the first case of XBB.1.5 has been detected in the country, there is not much information regarding its symptoms and nature. But, he advised the people to remain careful, take necessary precautions and follow COVID regulations for next 30-40 days.
