Bhubaneswar: With thunderstorm accompanied by gusty wind and rain bringing in large scale damage in several districts of Odisha on Thursday, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has sought reports from the affected districts.
According to sources, the gusty surface wind along with lightning and rain uprooted trees and snapped the branches at many places in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Pipili, Puri and Athgarh in the afternoon. It also plunged several areas into darkness as high tension wires snapped causing disruption in power supply.
Several kutcha and asbestos houses were damaged in Cuttack, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Sundargarh, Sambalpur and Dhenkanal districts, the sources said.
Following the reports of damage and disruption in power supply due to the nor’wester rain, the SRC directed the affected districts to liaise with DISCOMS for immediate power restoration.
It told the district collectors to take the help of local fire services for removal of uprooted trees and broken tree branches. The SRC also sought report on damages to houses and any casualties/injury if any due to thunderstorm or lightning on the day.
