Bhubaneswar: Fraudsters have duped at least 13 aspirants of more than Rs 20 lakh in the name of admission in engineering and medical colleges through NRI quota in Odisha.
This information has been gathered by the Special Crime Unit of Commissionerate Police, which had recently arrested two persons in an alleged admission scam in colleges of Odisha capital, sources said.
Following interrogation of the two arrested persons, the police came to know that accused have cheated at least 13 students and collected over Rs 20 lakh from them. Further investigation is in progress and more details are awaited.
The arrested have been identified as Abhinandan Barik (29) of Mayurbhanj and Rajesh Roshan Sahoo (30) of Jagatsinghpur. Two cars and Rs 5.47 lakh in cash were also seized from them following their arrest earlier this month.
The duo ran an office, DF Academy in IRC Village within Nayapalli police limits, and allegedly cheated several people on the promise of getting their wards admitted to B Tech, MBBS and other courses in reputed colleges in the city, sources said.
