Jagatsinghpur: A youth, who had recently returned from Tamil Nadu, was forced to spend seven days of the home quarantine period for migrants in a toilet at Jamugaon village in Nuagaon block in the district after his request for extension of institutional quarantine was turned down.
According to the sources, Manas Patra (28) was working in a company in Tamil Nadu. After returning to Odisha, he underwent the mandatory quarantine at a temporary medical camp (TMC) in Sudukanthi School and was discharged after 7 days.
After being discharged, he had to spend his home quarantine period inside a toilet from June 9-15 as there was not enough space for self-isolation in his house with six members.
Notably, the state government has made it mandatory for returnees in rural areas to undergo seven days’ institutional quarantine, after which asymptomatic persons are discharged and sent to home quarantine for another seven days.
When his request for an extension was turned down, Patra was left with no option but to take shelter in a Swachh Bharat toilet, close to his house.
Patra said he decided to stay in the toilet to ensure the safety of family members.
