Ishaan Mishra from Odisha lost his right leg after ejecting out of a Sukhoi-30 fighter jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) that crashed during a training sortie in Assam’s Tezpur on Thursday evening, sources said.
According to a report published in the Hindustan Times, the fighter jet was on a routine training mission and the pilots had reported engine trouble shortly before the crash. The crash was reported around 8.15 pm in the “local flying area”. The two pilots ejected safety and were rescued, it added.
One of the pilots suffered injury in his leg, defence spokesperson Lt Col Harsh Wardhan Pande had said.
A court of inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of accident.
The IAF had lost 11 aircraft, including seven fighter jets and two helicopters, last year, according to the data available with the Defence Ministry.
In June, 26 persons including IAF personnel were killed when IAF’s transport carrier An-32 crashed in Arunachal Pradesh.
