Balangir: Congress leaders demanded death sentence for the accused in the heinous murder of Mamita Meher. On Thursday, a Central delegation of the party met the lady teacher’s family members at Kantabanji’s Jharani village in the district on Thursday.
The Central team members including, party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala and state in-charge A Chellakumar were accompanied by Leader of Opposition Narasingh Mishra to Mehers’ house.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Surjewala demanded punishment to the accused under Section 120B, impartial probe by SIT team under the Chief Justice of High Court and completion of the proceedings in 90 days. Payment of Rs 1 crore compensation to the family, government job to the kin and death sentence to those found guilty, were the other demands of the party.
The heinous killings in Odisha are reminiscent of the Nirbhaya incident, said Surjewala. “This holy state of Lord Jagannath has become a province of crime. The killers are enjoying power and privilege. Not only in Mamita case, who was kidnapped and killed, there is also a big question mark on the safety of all girls in the state,” he said.
Stating that Congress will continue to fight for Mamita’s justice, Surjewal demanded that the party wants Mamita’s killers to be hanged and MoS Home Dibyashankar Mishra removed from power.
The Central team of the Congress is on a four-day visit to the state.
Narasingh Mishra had earlier stated that if needed he will again wear the black coat to fight for justice for Mamita.
