New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: Odisha-born Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer J B Mohapatra has been appointed chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved his appointment on Tuesday.
The CBDT frames policy for the Income Tax Department and can have six members, besides the chairman.
In July, the 1985-batch officer was given the additional charge as CBDT chairman after the extended tenure of incumbent P C Mody ended.
There was speculation then that he may be appointed as the regular CBDT chairman in the coming days by the Prime Minister-headed Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
Mohapatra is due to retire in April 2020.
Prior to these appointments, he had also served as principal chief commissioner of Income Tax for the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana region.
