Jajpur: A Class XII student died by suicide after allegedly being harassed by the authorities of a private college in Odisha’s Jajpur district.

According to sources, the 17-year-old, a student of Renaissance Higher Secondary School, allegedly consumed poison at home on Monday night. He was initially taken to community health centre at Madhuban and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where he passed away on Tuesday.

His father has lodged a complaint at Dharmasala police station, alleging that his son took the extreme steal after being mentally tortured by the school authorities.

“We got a call on August 4 from the school. When we reached there, my son looked stressed. The authorities asked us to take him home. After reaching home, my son said that he was ready for the punishment if the college authorities can provide CCTV evidence of the allegations against him. He committed suicide last night,” his father said.

The college authorities have refuted the allegations. “We told the parents that he was bunking classes and also kept a mobile phone, which was against the rules of the college. Such indiscipline is not tolerated as it can impact other students too. There was no mention of any theft though we had received some complaints from the students,” Bibhuti Bhubansan Rout of the college told reporters.
